The
Mud Volcanoes
Location: in Berca commune, Paclele village,
Buzau County.
Description:
The Mud Volcanoes region is a floristic and geological reservation
and covers an aria of 5 hectares. The phenomenon is due to
the natural gas emanations which infiltrate through the crust
cracks and in their way out to the surface they involve the
phreatic water together with the clay. By successive overflows
of mud “lava” structures resembling to volcanic
cones result. The vegetation is scarcely developed being represented
by species adapted to dry conditions. This is the only place
in Romania where a rare plant named Nitraria schoberi appears.
This plant is a natural protected monument.
