The
lakes with glacial origin
The presence of the quaternary
glaciers in the Carpathian Mountains determined the formation
of the glacial circuses and valleys, many of them sheltering
afterwards lakes. They are to be found at altitudes over 1900-2000
m.
In Rodna Mountains the following
lakes are to be found:Lala Mare Lake, Buhaiescu Lake, Iezeru
Pietrosului Lake, Repedea Lake.

Lala Mare Lake has
an aria of 5637 square meters and it is 1,6 meters in
deep.

Lala Mica Lake has
an aria of 1550 square meters and it is 0,4 meters in
deep.
In Fagaras Mountains there are
30 glacial lakes, among them being Balea Lake, Capra Lake,
Avrig Lake, Caltun Lake, Urlea Lake, Podragu Lake, Podragel
Lake, Doamnei Lake.

Balea Lake is situated
at an altitude of 2034 meters. It has an aria of 0,46
square kilometers and it has a maximum depth of 11 meters.
Surrounding the lake a reservation was settled. The Transfagarasan
road is located in the vicinity of Balea Lake. The Balea
Lake Challet is situated on the lakeside.

Capra Lake is situated
at an altitude of 2230 meters. It has an aria of 1,8 hectares
and it has a maximum depth of 8 meters.

Avrig Lake is situated
at an altitude of 2011 meters. It has an aria of 1,48
hectares and it has a maximum depth of 4,5 meters.

Caltun Lake is situated
at an altitude of 2175 meters. It has an aria of 0,8 hectares
and it has a maximum depth of 11,8 meters.

Urlea Lake is situated
at an altitude of 2170 meters. It has an aria of 2,15
hectares and it has a maximum depth of 4 meters.

Podragu Lake is situated
at an altitude of 2171 meters. It has a surface of 2,85
hectares and it has a maximum depth of 15,5 meters.

Podragel Lake is situated
at an altitude of 1993 meters. It has an aria of 0,71
hectares and it has a maximum depth of 3,9 meters.
In Parang Mountains there are to
be found the following lakes: Galcescu Lake, Slaveiu Lake,
Mija Lake, Rosiile Lake, Lacul Lung Lake, Pasarea Lake, Lacul
fara Fund Lake, Taul Inghetat Lake, Mandra Lake.

Galcescu Lake is situated
at an altitude of 1925 meters. It has an aria of 3 hectares
and it has a maximum depth of 9,3 meters.

Slaveiu Lake is situated
at an altitude of 2015 meters. It has an aria of 3,3 hectares
and it has a maximum depth of 6,1 meters.
in Retezat Mountains the majority of the Romanian
glacial lakes are to be found, the most representative ones
being Bucura Lake, Lia Lake, Ana Lake, Viorica Lake, Florica
Lake, Taul Portii Lake, Taul Agatat Lake, Galesul Lake,
Zanoaga Lake, Zanoguta Lake, Judele Lake, Taul Rasucit Lake,
Taul Unit Lake, Taul Ascuns Lake, Taul Portii Lake, Taul
Turcel Lake, Taul Gemenele Lake.

Bucura Lake is the largest
glacial lake from Romania (10,8 hectares ). It is situated
at an altitude of 2041 meters. It has a maximum depth
of 15,7 meters. The lake is populated with trouts.

Lia Lake is located lower
than Bucura Lake. It has an aria of 1,3 hectares and it
has a maximum depth of 4,3 meters.

Ana Lake is situated at an
altitude of 1930 meters. It occupies an aria of 3,13 hectares
and it has a maximum depth of 11,6 meters.

Viorica Lake is situated
at an altitude of 2070 meters. It has an aria of 0,94
hectares and it has a maximum depth of 5,7 meters.

Galesu Lake is situated at
an altitude of 2040 meters. It has a surface of 3,68 hectares
and it has a maximum depth of 20,5 meters.

Zanoaga Lake is situated
at an altitude of 1997 meters. It has an aria of 6,5 hectares
and it has a maximum depth of 29 meters, being the deepest
glacial lake from Romania.

Judele Lake is situated at
an altitude of 2202 meters. It has an aria of 0,84 square
meters and it has a maximum depth of 4,05 meters.

Taul Agatat Lake is situated
at an altitude of 2208 meters. It has an aria of 0,11
hectares and it has a maximum depth of 2,3 meters.

Taul Ascuns Lake is situated
at an altitude of 2180 meters. It has an aria of 0,38
square meters and it has a maximum depth of 1,7 meters.
Sfanta Ana Lake
Location: Sfanta Ana is located
in the Ciomatu Mountain, nearby Baile Tusnad locality, Harghita
County.
Description: Sfanta Ana Lake is
a lake of volcanic origin. It is situated at an altitude of
950 meters. The lake is round shaped, having 620 meters in
length and 460 meters in width. It has an aria of 22 hectares
and it is 7,1 meters deep. Sfanta Ana Lake was declared a
natural protected reservation. The Mohos marsh is located
1 km far from the lake.
Rosu Lake (Red Lake)
Location: is situated on the upper
course of Bicaz River, Harghita County.
Description: Rosu Lake is
a lake formed behind a natural barrage and it is situated
at an altitude of 980 meters. The lake was formed in 1837
when Ghicos Stone fell suddenly, blocking the Bicaz Valley.
The lake is known also by the name Ucigasul (the Killer).
It has an aria of 12,6 hectares and it has a maximum depth
of 10,5 meters. The Lacu Rosu Resort is located on the lakeside.
The karstic lakes
The most interesting karstic lakes
are: Ighiu Lake (in Trascau Mountains), Varasoaia Lake (in
Bihor Mountains), Zaton Lake, Ponor Lake (in Mehedinti Plateau),
Taul Batran Lake (Padurea Craiului Mountains), Ochiul Beiului
Lake (Aninei Mountains).
Ighiu Lake is situated nearby Ighiel
Village, Alba County. It is situated at an altitude of 940
meters. It has an aria of 5,26 hectares and it has a maximum
depth of 9 meters.
Zaton Lake is located in
Mehedinti County, in the karstic region named Ponoarele. It
has an aria of 20 hectares.
The salty lakes
The salty lakes are very important
as they are one of the elements which sustain the therapeutic
cures in the spas.
The lakes formed in the salt
massifs are either of natural origin or artificial ones (which
were formed in the former salt mines).
Most of the artificial lakes are situated in Transylvania,
in the vicinity of Ocna Mures, Ocna Sibiu, Ocna Dej, Turda,
Cojocna, Sic. In the hilly region called in Romanian “Subcarpati”
there are to be found the following lakes: Baia Baciului Lake,
Baia Rosie Lake, Baia Verde Lake, Telega Lake, Sarata-Buzau
Lake, Ocnele Mari, Govora. Ocna Sugatag Lake and Costiui Lake
are located in Maramures region .
The most important natural
salty lakes are to be found in Sovata-Praid region: Ursu Lake,
Alunis Lake, Verde Lake, Rosu Lake.
The most important salty
lakes from the plain region used in the balneal cures are:
Amara Lake, Sarat Lake, Balta Alba Lake.
Amara Lake
is located at 7 km far from Slobozia city. It has an aria
of 156 hectares and it has a maximum depth of 3 meters. On
the bottom of the lake there is sapropelic mud with acknowledged
therapeutically qualities. The water of the lake is rich in
many minerals. These features of the lake determined the settlement
of Amara Spa.
Sarat Lake (Salty Lake)
is located at 5 km far from Braila city. It has an aria of
1,72 square kilometers and it is 1 meter deep. The water of
the lake is very rich in minerals and on the bottom of the
lake there is sapropelic mud with therapeutically qualities.
These features of the lake determined the settlement of the
homonymous Spa.
Balta Alba Lake
is located at 56 km far from Buzau. It has an aria of 1012
hectares and it has a maximum depth of 4 meters. On the bottom
of the lake there is sapropelic mud. The qualities of the
water and that of the mud determined the settlement of the
Balta Alba Spa.
The salty lakes from the
seaside have a considerably mineralization and they are recommended
for balneal tourism. The most important of them are: Techirghiol
Lake, Costinesti Lake, Mangalia Lake, Agigea Lake.
Techirghiol Lake
is located at 17 km far from Constanta city. It has an aria
of 11,61 square kilometers and it has a maximum depth of 9,7
meters. The sapropelic mud from the bottom of the lake has
remarkable therapeutically qualities. The qualities of the
water and those of the mud determined the settlement of some
spas on the lakeside: Eforie Nord Spa, Eforie Sud Spa and
Techirgiol Spa.
Mangalia Lake
is located nearby the homonymous locality. It has an aria
of 2,61 square kilometers and it has a maximum depth of 13
meters. Thermal sulphur water springs are to be found on the
lakeside. These qualities determined the settlement of the
homonymous spa.
Agigea Lake
is located in the vicinity of Agigea commune. It has an aria
of 64 hectares and it has a maximum depth of 70 cm. The salty
water and the sapropelic mud recommended the settlement of
Agigea Spa.
The lakes from Danube Delta
There are over 450 lakes in Danube
Delta. They are recommended for the fishing or hunting fans,
for nautical sports or simply for leisure. Fortuna Lake, Puiu
Lake, Rosu Lake, Matita Lake, Merhei Lake, Dranov Lake, Gorgova
Lake, Bogdaproste Lake, Isac Lake are well-known.
The artificial lakes
Although their initial aim was
to serve the economical purpose the artificial lakes soon
became tourist attractions due to their landscape value and
to the easy access towards them. Izvoru Muntelui Lake, Vidra
Lake, Vidraru Lake, Fantanele Lake, Valiug Lake, Oasa Lake
are well-known and also very visited by the tourists.
Izvoru Muntelui Lake
is located at the feet of Ceahlau Mountain, nearby Bicaz locality.
It has an aria of 32,6 hectares and it has a maximum depth
of 96 meters. Teiului Stone rises from its waters. This stone
is 23 meters high. The water of the lake is rich in fish (trout,
chubs, barbels).
Vidra Lake
is located on Lotru River course. It has an aria of 940 hectares.
Vidraru Lake
is located on Arges River course, at 66 km far from Pitesti
city. You can easily reach Vidraru Lake by following the Transfagarasan
Rode. Vidraru Lake has an aria of 893 hectares and it is 155
meters deep. The water of the lake are rich in fish (trout,
chubs, barbels). The lake is recommended for nautical sports
or simply for leisure.
Fantanele Lake
is located on Somesul Cald River course, in the vicinity of
Belis commune, Cluj County. The lake has an aria of 8,15 square
kilometers.
Valiug Lake
is located on Barzava River course, in the vicinity of Valiug
commune, Caras-Severin County. The lake has an aria of 59
hectares. The lake is recommended for leisure. In Valiug commune
there is a trout nursery pond.
